When it comes to designing a home that feels balanced, inviting, and timeless, the colour palette is everything.
But what many homeowners don’t realise is that Sydney’s unique light and climate play a huge role in how colours appear and feel in your space. At Randall Design, we consider how orientation, time of day, and even the materials around your home can change the entire mood of a room.
Understanding Sydney Light
Sydney’s coastal light is bright and crisp, and it can amplify or wash out tones depending on your home’s orientation:
- North-facing spaces receive consistent warm light throughout the day. Mid-tones and warm whites perform beautifully here.
- South-facing rooms often need warmth, think sandy neutrals, warm greys, or rich, moody tones.
- East-facing rooms capture cool, fresh morning light, ideal for soft, serene colours.
- West-facing rooms can feel intense in the afternoon, so consider cooler, muted tones to offset the warmth.

Finding Your Foundation
Every colour story begins with a base. For Sydney homes, we often start with neutral foundations, layered whites, textured greys, or natural timbers, that reflect the city’s coastal and urban blend. Then we introduce depth through accent colours, artwork, or finishes that tell a story about the people living there.
Adding Character Through Accent Colour
At Randall Design, we love creating statement contrasts, those subtle or bold touches that make a space feel personal. From moody navy cabinetry to bold olive greens, colour can instantly shift a space from safe to sophisticated.
A Good Rule:
Choose one “hero” colour that feels emotional and pair it with two supporting tones that tie in texture, warmth, or contrast.

Material Matters
Colour doesn’t exist in isolation. Timber flooring, stone benchtops, and fabrics absorb and reflect light differently. We always sample colour in-situ, in daylight and under artificial light, before locking it in.
Colour Psychology in Design
The right palette can subtly influence how a space feels:
- Greens: restorative and grounding.
- Blues: calming and expansive.
- Earth tones: cosy and timeless.
- Dark neutrals: confident and sophisticated.

The Randall Design Approach
Our projects are never “one size fits all.” We take a layered approach, balancing natural light, architecture, and lifestyle to ensure the colour palette enhances the story of the space.
